Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of Doctor Sprinkler 6-Step Fertilizer Program?

How does the release of nitrogen help my lawn?

Benefits of Nitrogen
Nitrogen is the nutrient responsible for growth and coloring, which makes it vital for grass. In other plants, a large dose of nitrogen can cause rapid, leggy growth. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn recycles the nitrogen, but the process of absorption is too slow for clippings alone to meet all of a lawn’s nitrogen needs.

Nitrogen-Rich Mulches
Mulch can help your lawn retain moisture, regulate the soil’s temperature and prevent weeds from germinating. If you choose to mulch, a nitrogen-rich mulch has the added benefit of gradually releasing small amounts of nitrogen into the soil. Grass clippings and shredded leaves are the best sources of nitrogen to use as lawn mulch, and they’re easy to recycle from your own yard.

How does this fertilizer program work to control the weeds on my lawn?

If you have a large weed infestation in your yard, part of the fertilizer program includes treating your lawn with Q-4, a multiple purpose weed-killer. The right formulation uses multiple herbicides to control over 240 broadleaf weeds. It works quickly and effectively in a slower process to avoid burning the lawn like many other multi-purpose weed killers. Along with your starter fertilizer, it prevents a wide variety of weeds from taking over your lawn — weeds such as dandelion, bedstraw, hawkweed, thistle, spurge, and many more.

Optional Services

AERATION

Late August – Early September Aeration of lawn which pulls plugs from the lawn to help soil compaction and get air and nutrients to the roots. Includes one pass.

Late Aeration and overseeding: August – Early SeptemberAeration and overseeding – overseeding your lawn every two years is recommended to replace damaged and weak grass. Newer grass seed is more drought and fungus resistant. Includes two (2) passes (double aeration) and then we apply three (3) pounds per 1000 square feet of lawn for the overseeding. We use a blend of the best grass seed available.

Benefits of Aerating

  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
  • Enhanced soil water uptake.
  • Reduced water runoff and puddling.
  • Reduced soil compaction.
  • Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.
  • Improved fertilizer uptake and use.
  • Stronger turfgrass roots.
  • Improved resiliency and cushioning.

Benefits of Overseeding

  • Reduce Erosion: Grasses have compact, fibrous root systems that do an exceptional job of binding together. So, a densely planted, overseeded lawn ensures soil and water stay where you want them to, right at the root zone, reducing run-off and soil loss. This ultimately improves the overall health of your lawn because it can hold onto nutrients and moisture needed to thrive.
  • Improve Appearance: If you’re going to dedicate space and time to a lawn, make it luscious. Fill in brown, balding patches and areas damaged by pets and pests by planting a fresh batch of seeds. Simply rough up the spots that need attention with a rake, cast your seeds, and keep soils evenly moist until seeds germinate. Using a sprinkler that’s easy to move around allows you to target watering. A densely planted lawn, no matter the size, is immediately more inviting. Not only is it pleasing to the eye, it feels fabulous underfoot.
  • Reduce Risk of Pests & Disease: A healthy lawn is your best solution for preventing and combating pests and disease. An easy change to make when cultivating the healthiest lawn possible is to water less frequently and for longer periods of time to encourage a strong, well-developed root system. Another solution is overseeding. If your lawn has a long history with particular pests, you don’t need to apply chemicals, instead look for seed varieties that grow well in your climate. It’s best to choose seeds that require the least amount of water and are highly disease resistant. A mix of grass seeds with lawn daisies (Bellis perennis) is another wonderful solution. They attract and support pollinators and beneficial insects.
  • Increase Thickness: If a thick carpet of lawn is what you’re after, overseeding can do this too. A well-timed serving of seeds and the right amount of water will transform a thinning lawn into a plush stretch of green. The blades of grass can no longer be counted but instead flow together to form a verdant surface. It immediately becomes more durable, withstanding foot traffic and play, as well as holding up to natural weathering and environmental stress.
